Female Performance in a Comedy Programme

Jo Brand – Getting On

Dawn French – Roger and Val Have Just Got In

Miranda Hart – Miranda

Katherine Parkinson – The IT Crowd Verdict – Miranda Hart

Miranda Hart has been rising as the undisputed Queen of British Comedy these last couple of years. Having already picked up 3 British Comedy Awards this year, she is hard to rule out but she faces tough competition from established comedy legends in the form of Jo Brand and Dawn French.

Male Performance in a Comedy Programme

James Buckley – The Inbetweeners

Steve Coogan – The Trip

Tom Hollander – Rev

David Mitchell – Peep Show Verdict – James Buckley

The Inbetweeners was an instant phenomenon when it started back in 2008. Schools and Offices were instantly filled with the hilarious catchphrases that had spawned from the show. 3 Series in and the material has managed to stay as fresh and funny as ever. James Buckley plays every one’s favourite character Jay in the show and is well deserving of this award.

Entertainment Performance

Rob Brydon – The Rob Brydon Show

Stephen Fry – QI

Harry Hill – Harry Hill’s TV Burp

Graham Norton – The Graham Norton Show Verdict -Harry Hill

A particularly hard award to call. As much as I am a fan of Rob Brydon I didn’t find his new show as enjoyable as his previous work, had the potential to be a better version of the Jonathon Ross’ show but failed to live up it. Stephen Fry remains as solid as ever in his role as ‘ring leader’ on the panel show QI, but the long running show is beginning to get a little repetitive for my liking. Graham Norton = Marmite, you either love him or detest him, enough said. Harry Hill on the other hand has remained consistently funny over the years and I think will just about scrape the win.

Boardwalk Empire

The Killing

Mad Men Verdict – Glee

Yes I know what you are thinking… the other 3 contenders (and nearly everything else on TV) are infinitely better than Glee, but what can you do? It’s run-away popularity and die-hard fans make it a certain favourite for this award. And if it doesn’t win the award I won’t be too upset with my incorrect guess!

Comedy Programme

Catherine Tate’s Little Cracker

Come Fly With Me

Harry and Paul Verdict – Come Fly With Me

After Matt Lucas & David Walliams hit TV show Little Britain, their next project was always going to face a high level of scrutiny. They increased the pressure on the show ten-fold by broadcasting the pilot (excuse the pun) episode on Christmas Day. Whilst the show was not to everyone’s taste, the show still received critical acclaim and maintained high viewing figures.

Situation Comedy

Mrs Brown’s Boys

Peep Show

The Trip Verdict – Peep Show

Peep Show, 100% without doubt my favourite thing on UK television at the moment (Curse ITV2 for dropping Entourage!). Now heading towards it’s 8th season the popularity of the series has gone from strength to strength. The uniqueness of the POV camera style and the ability to relate to the real life situations are the culminating factors of its success.

Ricky Gervais Kicks Up A Storm at The Golden Globes

British actors and films picked up a few awards at the Golden Globes yesterday, but, British comedian, Ricky Gervais, who compered the show for the second (and undoubtedly last) time, took all the press.

While the photographers were lining up outside the “after parties” for shots of the great and the glorious celebs and the journalists were preparing questions for the celebrity winners and losers from the awards show, Ricky Gervais was ensuring that all their snaps and soundbites would be relegated to page two of any press for the 2011 Golden Globes. Gervais is a satirist and Hollywood found out that he seems to be a satirist that doesn’t care. Put one of these on a live show and there are always going to be issues.

Perhaps best summing up Gervais’s styl for the evening was his gag aimed directly at Hollywood’s biggest hitters on their lacklustre movie, The Tourist.

It was a big year for 3-D movies… seems like everything this year was three-dimensional. Except the characters in The Tourist… it must be good, because it’s nominated. So shut up.

A triple-whammy that hits two of the biggest Hollywood stars, a megaflop of a movie and the unusual nominating practices of the Hollywood Foreign Press.

As for the awards, our favourite Glee took a shed-load, so, someone somewhere got something right.

As for the British contingent, COLIN FIRTH won best actor in a drama for The King’s Speech, and CHRISTIAN BALE was best supporting actor for The Fighter. NATALIE PORTMAN won best actress in a drama for Black Swan.

Jamie Oliver – 30 minute meals and his outspoken and driven attitude to helping people eat better.

Jamie's 30 Minute Meals - Jamie Oliver's latest book accompanying his television showThe first showing of Jamie’s 30 minute meals is on air tonight on Channel 4 at 5:30pm. This new series for Jamie comes right in the middle of the UK airing of Jamie’s trip to Huntingdon in America where he used his UK knowledge and experience to try to kick start a change in the way American schools feed their pupils.

30 minute meals aims to show us how mastering a few basic skills and organising the right food in the house can allow us to put a meal on the table in the same time that it would take to prepare a ready meal or some similar pre-processed food.

Jamie is still pursuing his goal of helping the notion to eat better and seems to be the most publicly vocal (or perhaps just the most media-savvy) of the celebrity chefs that appeared on a glut of live and pre-recorded shows last year extolling the plight of battery chickens and the disadvantages of  processed foods.

Ahead of tonight’s airing of 30 minute meals, Jamie has been pinned down by The Guardian for an interview covering all of his recent activities. The interviewer is kind enough to realise that with a new addition to the family still only a couple of weeks old, Jamie is probably a little more blunt and defensive than usual, however, reading the article, you feel that Jamie has passed any point of tolerance with explaining his motives for doing things. He’s making it up as he goes along seems to be his message, but, he wants whatever he is doing to make a difference.

When being questioned on whether he thinks he is beginning to lecture people on what they should be allowed to eat, Jamie shows his lack of patience for such a subject by replying about a woman who was complaining that he would not let her child eat what he wanted,

while she was having a go at me she had the gall to have a baby in her arms feeding it Coke in a bottle, so she’s obviously thick as shit, you know; she was clearly thick as shit, because you don’t feed babies Coke in a teated bottle, and anyone who does is categorically wrong.

You can see Jamie’s 30 minute meals on Channel 4 on the following dates in October and November.

  • 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th
  • 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd
  • 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th

Actor Tony Curtis Dead from Cardiac Arrest Aged 85 – Nobody’s Perfect!

Oscar-nominated actor Tony Curtis, born Bernard Schwartz, died of cardiac arrest on Sept. 30 at age 85.

Tony Curtis' Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame - September 30, 2010His daughter, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, said

“My father leaves behind a legacy of great performances in movies and in his paintings and assemblages”

“He leaves behind children and their families who loved him and respected him and a wife and in laws who were devoted to him. He also leaves behind fans all over the world. He will be greatly missed.”

During an interview in London, an audience member asked Curtis what he would like to have written on his gravestone. ”Nobody’s perfect,” he quipped, quoting the final line of his best-loved comedy, Some Like it Hot.

Curtis gained his only Oscar nomination for his turn opposite Sidney Poitier in the tense racial parable The Defiant Ones. His other notable films include The Vikings, Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus and The Boston Strangler. Curtis always insisted that the latter film, in which he played serial killer Albert DeSalvo, was the finest performance of his career.

Curtis turned to painting in his later years, with some success.

Stephen Fry releases the second volume of his memoires, The Fry Chronicles

Stephen Fry Live - Oxford 2010 - Release of Stephen Fry's new book, The Fry Chronicles

We went to Oxford to see Stephen Fry talk about his new book, The Fry Chronicles at the New Theatre.

The show was an example of Stephen Fry as the consummate raconteur. Note free, with only a lectern and 7 blue lights on the stage, Fry talked freely for over an hour and half about some of the episodes from his life. Even though you can argue that he knew his subject, Fry seemed perfectly comfortable and at home on stage, chatting with the couple of thousand people sitting staring at him. But, this seems to be the opposite of his real feelings. His new book, The Fry Chronicles, part two of his autobiography, goes to gloriously wordy lengths to explain the pain, anguish and torment that Stephen Fry experiences constantly about his performances, writings and shows.

Stephen Fry Live - Oxford 2010 - Release of Stephen Fry's new book, The Fry ChroniclesAlthough Stephen’s torment may know no bounds, he still seems to get on and do a lot of it. Stephen Fry is everywhere we look, read or listen at the moment, something for which he apologises on his blog. If Fry is uncomfortable before every performance or publication, there must be a certain masochism in his actions as he produces material daily, in fact hourly, with his tweets and online updates. And the material he produces is not safe and comfortable platitudes like this piece. His Fry’s Chronicles is heralded as an open and painfully honest recollection and explanation of things that  may of us would want to keep firmly locked up in our closets.

What’s more, he makes it all very easy to get hold off too. Not just a simple print run for Mr Fry. He has released his book as an eBook, an iBook, and Audio Book and as a ground breaking iPhone App as week as the traditional paper and ink we expect.

WHAM! George Michael smashes into Snappy Snaps in North London

Singer George Michael is pictured leaving Brent Magistrates in London today where he was sentenced to 100 hours community service and banned from driving for two years after being caught at the wheel of his car under the influence of drugs in 2007

George emerging from his last brush with the law in 2007 after driving under the influence.

Wham, bam – I am, a man.
Job or no job, you can’t tell me that I’m not.
Do, you, enjoy what you do?
If not, just stop – don’t stay there and rot.

Sounds like George Michael should be looking back to his Wham! Rap lyrics from 1982 after whamming his car into the local Snappy Snaps photography shop in North London while under the influence of, and possessing, drugs. Hang on, driving into a camera shop, isn’t this the second time George has been done for indecent exposure?

It’s almost a shame that he has written his autobiography already as some of the stuff he is doing recently certainly seems to require some sort of explanation. The judge has given him an 8 week sentence, George will spend four weeks in prison and the remainder on licence. George was also banned from driving for five years and ordered to pay a £1,250 fine, £100 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

George is building up quite a rap sheet, here are the details

  • April 1998 Arrested in LA for “engaging in a lewd act” in a public toilet. Ordered to pay a $810 fine and 80 hours community service.
  • February 2006 Arrested for possession of Class C drugs. Cautioned and released.
  • June 2007 Charged with driving while unfit through drugs. Given a two-year driving ban and 100 hours community service.
  • September 2008 Arrested for possession of Class A and C drugs. Cautioned and released.
  • August 2010 Charged with driving under the influence of drugs and possession of Class B drugs. Given six-month interim driving ban until sentencing.
  • September 2010 Sentenced to eight weeks in prison, fined £1,250 and given a five-year driving ban.

George Micheals TWENTYFIVE albumApparently, George is writing again, or was reported to be until this happened. Perhaps we’ll see another song written to match the crime. Instead of a video inside public toilets, we’ll be in the camera shop with paparazzi style flashbulbs going off everywhere.

25 by George Michael, available for only £11.19 is his latest album. Let’s hope this isn’t then umber of months he gets next time.
